Eastbound and Down S4Ep1-2 Thoughts

eastbound

Ah yes! The fourth, and final, season of HBO’s hilarious-yet-offensive comedy show “Eastbound and Down” has started. It’s been a year since it originally ended (season three was thought to be the show’s end) but the cable network decided to bring it back.

After the way the third season ended, I had NO idea in what direction the writers would go in. I mean there’s two ways they could’ve went and they did pick one of them.

*SPOILERS*

They could’ve either chosen a) have Kenny remain “dead” and have him create a new persona/life of his or b) let it be known that Kenny faked his own death and have him deal with the consequences. The writers went with a variation of the latter.

Now that there’s some backstory to it, let’s get into the first two episodes of season four, the final season.

In the first two episodes, we find out that Kenny has given up his old life and is now a family man.

“What the fuck is this shit!?” were my first thoughts a couple minutes into the show.

Several years after faking his own death, Kenny now has a son and a daughter while working at a rental car company. My, how the mighty have fallen! The writers fucked up last season by giving having Toby show up in season three.

During the episodes, parts of his old life start creeping back into his life, tempting him to convert back to his old ways but Kenny stays strong and fights them off. Boring! We don’t want that. We want the bad ass. We want that offensive motherfucker.

Temptation becomes too much to bear when he meets his old baseball compadre, Guy Young, another good character.

They begin to catch up and Young mentions former Kenny, saying he saw he drink firewater out of a hooker’s crotch followed by Kenny performing oral on her. Just more vulgar. It was hilarious.

He catches a glimpse of his former life on a night out with Young and his posse. This night makes him wish for fame, again. Hell yeah, Kenny is almost back. However, his wife April isn’t feeling it, she likes the current Kenny, yet he’s sick of his current life. He visits Stevie, who now has a nice little Mexican army (four children), to rekindle their old lifestyle but he refuses.

Tired of his current life, Kenny reverts back to his former, quitting his job, upsetting his wife and giving no fucks. He does some drugs, weed, ecstasy and cocaine, and begins his new life, err, continues where he left off, before his “death.”

This is what I’m talking about, keep this Kenny, none of this bullshit family man, I have a nine to five job Kenny. The loudmouth, swearing, offensive-and-at-times-racist, drug loving, women loving, Kenny powers is that character I loved.

With the help of Young, Kenny becomes a panelist on a sports talk/debate show, think of ESPN’s PTI and Around the Horn. The way he become a panelist is hilarious, good job writers.

The first episode starts off slow but picks up near the end as the old Kenny “motherfuckin’” Powers returns! I love this character, his “IDGAF” attitude is iconic and makes this show great.

Episode segments like Stevie’s interaction with his four children, Kenny and Stevie’s fight, the air punch/boxing battle between Kenny and his boss, the drag racing, and the sports show segments were hilarious. That’s the kind of material I want to see as the season unfolds, hopefully more laugh-out-loud moments occur as they push aside the old family-first Kenny Powers.

If the second episode is any indication on how the rest of the season is then it should be a great season and it can finally ride off into the sunset, again.
