Artists: Freddie Gibbs and Madlib
Album / Mixtape: Piñata
Check Out: “Thuggin’”
Why: The mixture of Gibbs gangsta raps and Madlib’s beats created a dope collaborative album of two opposite worlds.
This isn’t the first Madlib project I’ve liked. The first one was with Strong Arm Steady. That project was dope. So I knew this one would be dope too.
Gibbs killed Baby Face Killa. Then, he dropped ESGN, which I’ll admit, I’ve never really listen to. He came back and dropped (Cocaine) Piñata—great original name—and shut shit down.
As soon as I heard the project, I knew it was magnificent. The beats were funky, soulful and overall dope. The raps were nuts! Gibbs is at his best on here.
I love “Robes.” I don’t have to say anything else.
“Thuggin’” is Gibbs to the tee. Gibbs isn’t a phony rapper. He’s a real dude. He’s lived the stuff he’s rapped about. He’s admitted to dealing and robbing in his past life, and I believe it. The lyrics are extraordinary and provide a glimpse to the street life.
Gibbs’ ode to Los Angeles, “Lakers,” is dope. For not being a born-Angeleno, he captured everything L.A. in this song. He’s been a resident of L.A. for almost a decade now, so he knows what he’s talking about. The addition of Ab-Soul, an L.A. County resident, is welcomed, as Soulo decides to put a foot in the song’s ass. He kills it.
